Sustainability at St Luke's Preschool
At St Luke’s Preschool we aim to provide an environment that strives to meet positive sustainability through daily education practices. We are on a journey to Carbon Neutrality, and we believe that making changes in our everyday practices will make a positive change in creating a more sustainable future for our children.
We offer a range of sustainable practices for educators to role model and have children participate in each day. Our preschool environment contains worm and compost bins that encourage both children and educators to reduce waste through the disposal of food scraps. The worm farms are used to fertilise vegetable gardens which provide children opportunities to learn, experience and taste fresh growing vegetables. Our compost bins also assist in helping our gardens and plants grow.
Throughout the preschool, we have labelled bins to assist with disposing of materials in the best sustainable manner. These bins are used for paper/cardboard recycling, food scraps and general waste. We recycle our plastic waste which includes yogurt containers, ziplock bags, plastic bags and plastic packaging. The Sunshine and Rainbow rooms collect the items in tubs and then dropped off to our local plastic recycling location.
In our daily routines we continue to research and update to environmentally friendly, biodegradable and sustainable resources ranging from cleaning products to art materials. By making these changes we are able to have positive, sustainability practices embedded into our daily programs, demonstrate healthy sustainability examples to children, provide information to families and continue those practices into our own homes.
As we look forward, we aim to continue to make changes and reviewing our sustainability practices regularly, ensuring that we are leaving a positive footprint on our environment and provide positive examples, role modelling and tools for the children as they embark on their futures.
